"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust."Psalm 91:1-2  Some have called the verse above God's 911. It reminds us that He is the one to call on in times of trouble. Recently, an American journalist was beheaded by terrorists in Iraq. A war is raging in Ukraine and there is rioting in the streets here in the USA. Even in Memphis, murder is a daily tragedy. But God is still on His throne and He is our fortress and refuge. The men who come to Calvary Rescue Mission know that Calvary is a safe place where they can find help and comfort.

CURRENT NEWS
When you think about the square footage in your home, think about 48 men sleeping in a 1,120sq ft basement area. That is 24sq ft per person, less than a jail cell where they have 32sq ft each! God has blessed us these 47 years of housing homeless men. We have over three acres of land, we have plans for a new facility that will house 108 men, all we need are the funds to begin build-ing our handicap accessible building. There are steps going down to the dining and dorm area; steps up to the shower and bathroom area as well as the chapel. It is very difficult for those men who are on crutches, or are walking with a cane with all the steps we have in our building. The Lord said “as you do it to one of the least of these, you are doing it unto me.” We would appreciate your prayerful consid-eration of exactly what God would have you give, or pledge to give, in order to make this new building a reality. PRAISE THE LORD WE HAVE RECEIVED FUNDS OR PLEDGES EXCEEDING ONE MILLION DOLLARS!  Please help us reach our goal of Four Million Dollars!

APRIL 1st LUNCHEON

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me...” Psalm 23:4 Many of the men who seek shelter at Calvary are walking through a dark valley in their lives. They come in tired and feeling beat down by life and the world. How-ever, a majority of them comment during chapel about how blessed and valued they feel because so many people come to serve at Calvary and care for our ministry. You do make a difference in lives when you pray, serve and support.
Our goal is to reach homeless men and others with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and provide temporary shelter, food and clothing to homeless men who are in need. Last year over 813 men made decisions to follow Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
OUR HISTORY CALVARY Rescue Mission opened its doors April 1, 1967, to homeless men in Memphis, Tennessee, by Milton Hatcher. Milton was a drunk and a barber who cut hair at a shop next to Central High School. Through the quiet but firm and constant Christian witness he received from his wife, Betty, Milton came to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He got saved on Sunday night, April 7, 1963 at Thrifthaven Baptist Church. He got under conviction that morning. When the invitation was given that night he ran down the aisle. It was a Baptist preacher that led him to the Lord. He was baptized that very night.  After Milton was saved he said that he knew that God wanted him to do something, but he was not sure what it was. He told Betty that he was going to lock himself up in a building behind his house until God told him what to do. Two and a half days later he came out and said that God wanted him to start a rescue mission. Milton got an old hearse and used it to pick up drunks in downtown Memphis. They say that the hearse had quite a sobering effect on the men and Milton was very successful in seeing some saved.  An old brochure for the mission lists the following past locations:  April 1, 1967 to August 1, 1968 - 863 Jackson Ave., August 1, 1968 to October 31, 1969 - 893 Jackson Ave., October 31, 1969 to April, 1972 - 944 Linden Ave., April of 1972 until the present - 960 South Third Street. (Hatcher, 1979)  Over the years, many souls have been saved at the nightly chapel meetings, and also at the luncheons that were started by "Bull" Bramlett. The mission has been blessed to have such notable speakers as Adrian Rodgers, Bobby Moore, Bob Pittman, and others. (Hatcher, 1971)  The dream to have a place that carries out our Lord's word found in Matthew 25:31-46 lives on today at CALVARY Rescue Mission. Brother Milton went to be with the Lord in August of 1995. In December of that same year, Brother Bob Freudiger graduated from Mid America Baptist Theological Seminary and was called to be the executive director of the mission. Bob and his sweet wife, Barbara, had prayed for years that God would call them into a inner city ministry where they would be able to minister to lost men. God really has a way of answering prayers.  The mission has been open for over 43 years strictly from donations from churches and Christian friends. CALVARY Rescue Mission is a totally independent (dependent on God of course) not for profit charitable organization that accepts no government money. Through the years it has pleased God to continue to operate the mission in this manner.
Alan Barnhart came to Christ in high school at a Young Life camp in
Colorado. Alan has an amazing wife, Katherine, and 6 children.
Alan states that he has a boring resume as he has worked at the same
company since he was 10 year of age, and has had the same position
since 1986. Barnhart Crane and Rigging Company is a Heavy Lifting
and Heavy Transport company based in Memphis, TN with offices in
20 cities in the US. By God’s grace, the company has grown an average of 22 % per year for 25 years. Barnhart provides services to heavy industry and construction, focusing on power plants (wind, nuclear, and fossil fuel) and the petrochemical industry. Alan’s fear of affluence cause him to cap his lifestyle. His passion for missions has taken him to over 50 countries. The company profits are invested in strategic missions. Barnhart team members and spouses take part in the decision-making process. Over 40 team members have traveled internationally in that effort. Alan is active at First Evangelical Church and the Boy Scouts.

VISION AND MINISTRY Our vision and ministry is patterned after our Lord's words. Calvary offers a discipleship ministry for men who have a deep desire to grow in Christ and serve others.  Our hope is to see the evangelized evangelize.    “Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.”John 6:47 Calvary ministers to the body so that we can minister to the soul. “I was hungry and thirsty and you fed me and gave me drink.”Matthew 25:35 Calvary provides temporary housing for homeless men in a Christian environment.   “I was a stranger and you took me in.”  Matthew 25:35 Calvary provides clothing through our clothes closet ministry.  "I was naked and you clothed me."Matthew 25:36 Calvary maintains a relationship with our clients who are hospitalized or incarcerated.  Partnerships with sister ministries help us in this area as well. "I was sick and in prison and you came to me."Matthew 25:36
For January 2014We had 142 men saved, housed 1,072 men, served 3,616 meals, and provided clothing for 28.
HOW CAN I HELP? We are so thankful to have friends who love to help others.  One of the best ways to begin helping at Calvary Rescue Mission is to schedule a time for your small group to come to the mission and help serve dinner to the homeless.  You can also attend our nightly chapel service.  Evening schedule at Calvary  4:00 PM     Men check in   5:00 PM     Visitors & staff eat supper   6:00 PM     Supper is served to the men   6:30 PM     Clean up time   7:00 PM     Chapel services begin   8:00 PM     Chapel services end 10:00 PM     Lights Out There may also be opportunities to prepare meals, bring snacks for after chapel, participate in chapel services (by singing, testifying, or doing a devotional), or even conducting the chapel service. Since we have been particularly blessed in this area, opportunities are limited. It is likely that you will discover other opportunities to help as you visit the mission. Please contact us to schedule your visit.  In addition to visits at night, you may want to schedule your youth or other group to do a "clean up / fix up" day at the mission. These visits are normally 10am to 2pm Saturdays during the school year and weekdays during the summer. You may also want to watch the newsletter, website, and facebook for the "needs list". Last, feel free to be creative. Perhaps you have an idea for a way to help that we have not considered.  Thank you for helping Calvary Rescue Mission as we minister to "The least of these".
